The Absolute Solar Case Study

Overview
I worked with the owner-director of a family business seeking to expand his business. He wanted to grow beyond its established market and build a more resilient platform for long-term growth. What began as management consultancy support on a series of strategic initiatives quickly developed into a broader Non Executive Director role focused on growth, governance, operational discipline, and leadership development.
The Challenge
The business had built a strong position in the insulation market for new-build homes, but continued growth exposed increasing operational and regulatory complexity. To scale effectively, the leadership team needed stronger systems, clearer accountability, and broader management capability.
At this point, I was asked to assess the commercial potential of solar and advise whether the company should move early into what was then an emerging market. The opportunity for diversification was significant, but success depended on entering a new sector with the right strategy, operating model, commercial discipline, and leadership confidence.
Non Executive Director Role
My role combined strategic Non-Executive Director oversight with practical management consultancy support. I worked closely with the owner-director and senior team to challenge assumptions, strengthen decision making, and translate strategy into an executable plan. This included support on director development, compliance with emerging standards, business modelling, product and process selection, financial analysis, and commercial negotiation.
Delivering Results
I supported the leadership team in evaluating the solar opportunity through structured market assessment, external insight, and disciplined commercial analysis. A key contribution was enabling informed decision making in a sector that was new to the business, reducing reliance on instinct and increasing confidence in the chosen direction.
Once the decision was taken, I worked with the directors and senior team from strategy through to implementation. This included shaping the market proposition, helping develop the brand, establishing operating systems, strengthening the organisational structure, and supporting both direct and channel routes to market. The role extended beyond advisory input into practical delivery support to give the new venture a credible platform for growth.
Outcome and Impact
The strategic value of this work became clear when a sudden change in government policy disrupted the original business model. Because the diversification strategy had already been developed and implemented, Absolute Solar became central to the company’s resilience and recovery. The business went on to grow across domestic installation, new-build housing, and commercial solar, creating a stronger platform from which the wider company could rebuild and later re-enter its original market.
Leadership and Succession Development
A further element of my role was supporting the owner in developing the next generation of leadership within the family business. Through structured guidance and development support, family members were able to build capability, assume greater responsibility, and prepare for a managed succession. This gave the owner confidence to step back from the Managing Director role and helped secure longer-term continuity under a stronger leadership team.
